چکیده

Resumen Background: Although there is a broad consensus on the use of statistical procedures for mediation analysis in psychological research, the interpretation of the effect of mediation is highly controversial because of the potential violation of the assumptions required in application, most of which are ignored in practice. Method: This paper summarises two currently independent procedures for mediation analysis, the classical/ SEM and causal inference/CI approaches, together with the statistical assumptions required to estimate unbiased mediation effects, in particular the existence of omitted variables or confounders. A simulation study was run to test whether violating the assumptions changes the estimation of mediating effects. Results: The simulation study showed a signifi cant overestimation of mediation effects with latent confounders. Conclusions: We recommend expanding the classical with the causal inference approach, which generalises the results of the fi rst approach to mediation using a common estimation method and incorporates new tools to evaluate the statistical assumptions. To achieve this goal, we compare the distinguishing features of recently developed software programs in R, SAS, SPSS, STATA and Mplus.

Causal Inference Lecture Notes: Classical Approaches to Statistical Analysis of Randomized Experiments

Building upon the statistical framework of causal inference, we consider classical approaches to statistical analysis of randomized experiments. The use of randomized experiments in scientific inquiry goes back at least to the 19th century, but formal statistical methods to analyze these experiments were developed in early 20th century by J. Neyman and R. Fisher. The methods they developed were...

Mediators, Moderators, and Tests for Mediation

The following points are developed. First, mediation relations are generally thought of in causal terms. Influences of an antecedent are transmitted to a consequence through an intervening mediator. Second, mediation relations may assume a number of functional forms, including nonadditive, nonlinear, and nonrecursive forms Special attention is given to nonadditive forms, or moderated mediation,...

The Deductive Approach to Causal Inference∗

This paper reviews concepts, principles, and tools that have led to a coherent mathematical theory that unifies the graphical, structural, and potential outcome approaches to causal inference. The theory provides solutions to a number of pending problems in causal analysis, including questions of confounding control, policy analysis, mediation, missing data, and the integration of data from div...

An introduction to causal inference.

This paper summarizes recent advances in causal inference and underscores the paradigmatic shifts that must be undertaken in moving from traditional statistical analysis to causal analysis of multivariate data. Special emphasis is placed on the assumptions that underlie all causal inferences, the languages used in formulating those assumptions, the conditional nature of all causal and counterfa...
